If you’re new to pickleball, one of the first things to understand is how the scoring system works. Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, and its scoring system is just as unique and exciting. Whether you’re just learning the game or getting ready to hit the courts, this guide will walk you through the basics of how pickleball scoring works.
1. Basic Rules of Pickleball Scoring
In pickleball, games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by at least two points. However, some tournaments might extend the game to 15 or 21 points, but the “win by two” rule still applies.
Points can only be scored by the serving team. This means that if you’re on the receiving team, you can’t score until it’s your turn to serve. If the receiving team wins a rally, they don’t gain a point but rather gain the chance to serve.
2. Serving Rotation and the “Side Out”
In pickleball, serving doesn’t switch between teams after every rally. Instead, each player on the serving team gets a chance to serve before the serve goes to the opposing team. This is referred to as a “side out.”
- In doubles play: Both players on a team have the opportunity to serve before the serve is turned over to the other team. The exception to this rule is at the start of the game, where the first team to serve only allows one player to serve before switching.
- In singles play: The serving simply alternates between players.
3. Calling the Score
When the server announces the score, they say three numbers:
- The serving team’s score
- The receiving team’s score
- The server number (1 or 2)
For example, if the score is 6-4-2, it means the serving team has 6 points, the receiving team has 4 points, and it’s the second server’s turn.
4. Winning the Game
As mentioned, most games are played to 11 points with a win-by-two rule. If a game is tied 10-10, it continues until one team wins by two points. In more competitive or tournament play, games may be played to 15 or 21 points, but the win-by-two rule still applies.
5. Singles Scoring
Scoring in singles works similarly to doubles, except there’s only one server. In singles, you serve from the right side of the court when your score is even and from the left side when your score is odd.
Understanding the scoring system in pickleball is essential to enjoying the game, and once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. So grab your paddle, head to the court, and have fun playing this exciting sport!
