Pickleball Court Dimensions: Diagram and Layout Explained

A standard 44-foot-by-20-foot pickleball court is divided into zones, each serving a specific purpose directly related to gameplay. The following boundary lines define the zones.

• Baseline: The 20-foot back line runs parallel to the net at each end of the court. Serves are initiated from behind this line—touching or crossing it during a serve results in a fault.
• Sidelines: The 44-foot sidelines define the left and right boundaries of the court. Different from tennis, the sideline width in pickleball is the same for singles and doubles games.
• Non-Volley Zone (NVZ or the Kitchen): Extending 7 feet from the net on both sides of the court, the kitchen is the most strategically charged zone. Players may not hit the ball out of the air while standing inside the kitchen or on its lines.
• Service Courts: Behind each kitchen line sits a 20-foot-wide by 15-foot-deep playing area split down the middle into two 10-foot-by-15-foot boxes. These are the left and right service courts where all rally action begins.
• Centerline: Dividing the left and right service courts, the centerline runs from the kitchen line back to the baseline on each side of the net.

What Is the Size of the Pickleball Kitchen?

The kitchen, also called the non-volley zone (NVZ), is 7 feet deep and 20 feet wide on each side of the net. This creates a 14-foot no-play corridor through the center of the court.

Key rules: No volleying is allowed while standing inside the kitchen or touching any of its lines. If your follow-through after a volley carries you across the kitchen line, it counts as a fault. Players are free to step inside the kitchen, as long as the ball has bounced before they play it.

How to Measure a Pickleball Court Correctly

All measurements are taken to the outside edge of each line, and all lines are 2 inches wide.

1. Set the Net Line: Find the center of your space and establish the net line first. The posts sit 12 inches outside each sideline, with the net measuring 34 inches in height at the center and 36 inches at the posts.
2. Mark the Sidelines: From the net, measure 22 feet in both directions perpendicular to the net line and mark all four corners.
3. Square the Court: Measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. On a traditional 20 × 44 ft court, each diagonal must measure exactly 48 feet, 4 inches. Matching diagonals confirm a square court.
4. Mark the Kitchen: From the net, measure 7 feet toward each baseline along the sidelines and connect those marks with a line running parallel to the net across the full 20-foot width. Repeat on both sides.
5. Mark the Service Courts: From each kitchen line, measure 15 feet back to the baseline. Draw a centerline down the middle of that area, from the kitchen line to the baseline, to create the left and right service boxes.

How Much Space Do You Need for a Pickleball Court?

Even though an official pickleball court measures 20 × 44 feet, players need room to move beyond the lines. Here’s how much total space to plan for:

• Minimum Play Space: The smallest footprint that allows for safe play is 30 feet wide × 60 feet long (1,800 sq ft). This includes 5 feet of clearance on each sideline and 7 feet behind each baseline. This space serves as the minimum buffer for chasing down wide shots and deep returns.
• Recommended Recreational Space: For a more comfortable, safer backyard setup, a 34-foot-wide × 64-foot-long area (2,176 sq ft) is ideal. The extra clearance on all sides gives players room to recover after aggressive shots without running into fences or obstacles.
• Tournament Recommendations: Sanctioned play calls for the same 34-foot × 64-foot footprint per court, with solid fencing and dividers between adjacent courts. 
• Outdoor Orientation: For outdoor courts, orienting the long axis north-south keeps the sun out of players’ eyes during morning and evening play.

Are Indoor and Outdoor Pickleball Courts the Same Size?

Yes, the court dimensions for indoor and outdoor pickleball are the same. However, there are differences in considerations for the space surrounding the boundaries and the play area.

• Ceiling Height: You don’t have to consider ceiling height when you’re outdoors. But for an indoor court, you need at least 18 feet of vertical clearance, and 26 feet is preferred for competitive play.
