Transform Your Driveway into a Pickleball Court: A Complete Guide

Pickleball is rising in popularity, which means courts are getting more crowded. Instead of waiting around, you can play pickleball in the comfort of your home. If you have a large enough driveway, then you’ve got your own pickleball court!

Learn how to turn your driveway into a pickleball court below.

Why Choose Your Driveway for a Pickleball Court?

There are many practical reasons to choose your driveway for pickleball.

Space Efficiency

Your driveway is already there, you may as well use it! A driveway can be used for both car space and pickleball. If you want to play, you can temporarily move your car into the street until you’re done playing.

Cost-Effective Alternative

Driveway pickleball can save you money in two ways. The first is that you don’t have to rent space on a private pickleball court. You can just play whenever you want to for free.

The second way is that doing it yourself will save you money on a professional, permanent court, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Easy Setup and Storage

It only takes a few minutes to transform your driveway into a court with a net and court lines. Portable nets make it easy to pack up and store the court in the garage when not in use.

Fun for Everyone

Everyone loves pickleball! Having a driveway court allows you to have fun with friends, family, and even your neighbors. You can include children and older adults in games so everyone takes part.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Driveway Pickleball Court

Turning your driveway into a pickleball court is easy. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Measure Your Driveway Space

First, you need to see if your driveway works as a pickleball court. Standard courts are 44′ by 20′ for both singles and doubles play. The overall area should be around 60’ by 30’.

If your driveway isn’t this large, you can try to scale down your court. However, it can affect how you play, particularly if you’re used to standard-size courts. If you are a casual player or looking for something fun to do with others, the adjustment shouldn’t be a problem.

Step 2: Draw Out Your Court Lines

Creating a court requires drawing out court lines. What you use for the lines will depend on how often you will play:

  • Occasionally: If you plan to play every once in a while and would rather not permanently alter your driveway, drawing court lines with chalk is easy and can be easily removed.
  • Consistently: If you plan to play consistently but still don’t want to alter your driveway, you can create the court lines using duct or pickleball tape. The tape will stay on longer but can be removed if needed.
  • All the time: If you want your DIY pickleball court available 24/7, you can use spray paint. It will only need the occasional touch-up.

For a proper pickleball court, make sure you have:

  • The baselines: These lines mark the end of the court’s length on both sides. Players can’t cross these lines without leaving the court.
  • The sidelines: These lines are what they sound like—the lines on each side that connect the two baselines.
  • The centerlines: Each half of the court will have a centerline, which cuts that side in half. The centerline runs from the baseline to the non-volley line.
  • Non-volley line: This line is around seven feet from the net and runs horizontally across the court on both sides of the net.

Step 3: Select a Pickleball Net for Your Driveway

You can’t play pickleball without a net! You want to choose a net that not only is the right size for your court, but is also easy to move around. Having a net that can fold up, is lightweight, or on wheels will make turning your driveway into a pickleball court so much easier.
